An expensive toy?

I have to admit it - I am a gadget freak. I'm not as bad as I used to be. I think it's because our discretionary income has gone down with Tish not working, so I restrain myself more. Otherwise, I'd be the poster child of someone having anything that requires batteries to run.

So what happened was that we went to Michigan over the weekend and I got a couple of belated Christmas gifts - cash. It was enough that I was tempted towards the one thing I'd been eyeing, but not considering. Until now. Yep. Within two hours of my having cash in my pocket, I was at Best Buy getting the 5th generation iPod - the 30GB video one. I already have a 1GB MP3 player, so the only reason I was wanting this thing was for the videos.

So I've had it now for a few days, and I have to say it's got some great points, and some not so great points. Memory is virtually limitless - I downloaded a couple of DVDs to it, and they were about 600MB each. The biggest problem is battery life. When playing MP3s, it's no issue - 10 hours or so. But playing video... So far I'm seeing that it's no better than 45-50 minutes before it needs a charge.

As a toy, it's pretty cool. I just don't know if I should keep it. Any votes?

Well, lol, *I* would take it back, just because *I* dont see the point in having expensive toys, but if it gives you great pleasure, then cool! :-)

And I'm sorry about your first comment... I'm still new to this blogging thing and I didnt realize that I had it set to "approve" comments before they would show up! I was starting to feel like an outcast since I didnt have a single comment on my page, but there they all were, just waiting to get approved! Silly me. :P

All boys need toys no matter the age. I vote keep it and buy some chargers. : )

Is your purpose in owning the video iPod to watch DVD's? If so then I vote take it back and watch them on your laptop... bigger screen, power outlet in airplanes, etc.

Another thing to consider is that Nate M. knows how to change a regular iPod into a video iPod. Johnny has the 20G color U2 iPod but wishes he had video... with Nate's help he can have the best of both worlds Something to consider.

I'm not a huge gatdget gal but I can't say I don't see the point in having expensive toys.. i like my camera and my Roomba (when its working :()

LOL, yeah, I guess I could see the point in having expensive toys if they were the kind of toys that *I* wanted, like an expensive camera, for example!

I hope my first comment didnt come off as rude. It is hard to get across your tone of voice and such through the keyboard. :) All was said with a big :-D

elizabeth: so now we all know what your deepest, darkest temptation is! haha. see.. now if you'd gone out and bought a 10mp camera, i would have had the same reaction.

lisa: can you give a teaching on that at the next women's bible study? :-)

michelle: yea.. the ipod at this time is mostly for videos. laptops are great, but you look like the biggest geek if you're sitting at the airport watching movies on them. and i at least like to pretend i'm cool! also... converting a photo ipod to video means putting linux on it. then it's a regular old handheld computer. it's tricky, and i would advise johnny not to be too eager to try it. hey you have a roomba? how does it work?!! feedback please!

Roomba: it definitely has its pros and cons. I don't have the "scheduled" Roomba but that sounds really nice....

Pros:
*it gets under the furniture (beds, crib, dresser, changing table) and collects all those nasty dust balls
*i can turn it on and leave the house and come home to clean floors!

Cons:
*its not easy to clean out... hair gets tangled in there and sometimes it takes me 10-15 minutes to get it completely cleaned out
*its only really good for hardwood floors. It works much slower on carpet
*sometimes it gets stuck on something and stops... or can't get over the rug in Addy's room and stops... not a big deal really but, you know

BIG CON* Its broken right now.

Bottom line... I enjoyed it while it worked but I probably wouldn't buy another one... even though it was a birthday gift (combined from three people!) it was expensive.

elizabeth, i don't think you sounded rude :)

Oh, good. I've been worrying about that all night....

And about the roomba... I had no idea what that was!!! But I thought I might look like a geek if I asked. haha! Now I think I got the picture. :)

Bipin, so what do you do to try to look "cool" at the airport??

elizabeth: i don't understand your question... what do you mean "try"?

haha... kidding again. if you're ever at the airport, take a look at all the business types lugging laptop cases. i don't think anything can ever make us look cool. well.. maybe if i was tapping away at my blackberry (which i don't have, and don't really want).

hey michelle, thanks for the feedback. sorry about the big con part. has it permanently given up it's ghost?

by the way, todd bought be a really cool ipod case and wall charger for my birthday. so i believe it's for keeps now.

Wow, bipin, this must be the most amount of comments you've ever had.

Roomba',s Ipod's, my latest toy desire is the new Apple laptop with the intel chip - they claim 4x faster than the Powerbook. I CAN'T IMAGINE the speed of that sucker. only problem is, my other toy - the dvd camcorder, does not work with an apple ... can you believe it?

i love toys - i think they are vital :) ... to not being too bored ... or left behind!

Video iPods rule I think. I say keep it man. Though I honestly think the battery life sucks on purpose. They have old batteries lying around from the previous generation which they'll use before coming out with a new, longer lasting battery... anyway.. just my two cents. Enjoy your new toy! Gadgets are awesome.
